Uganda, traditionally known for Robusta, is producing high-quality Arabica, especially on the slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains in the west. Known as the 'Mountains of the Moon' and stretching along the border with the DRC, this range offers high altitudes, fertile soil, and plentiful rainfall—ideal conditions for Arabica. Coffee production here is a key driver for rural development for the Bakonzo tribe, who grow coffee under the shade of banana trees on small plots (around 1 hectare).

Kyagalanyi is working with these smallholder farmers to access specialty markets through their Kisinga Coffee Station and a comprehensive extension program. This effort addresses key challenges, including low yields due to old trees, nutrient deficiencies, and diseases like Coffee Berry Disease (CBD). Kyagalanyi provides extensive training (model farms, household visits) and services like Coffee Youth Teams for commercial farm management (rejuvenation/stumping).

The coffee is processed using the Natural method at Kyagalanyi’s modern wet mill in Kisinga. Farmers deliver only fully ripe cherry (95% red cherry policy), which is then floated and dried on raised African beds inside greenhouses for about 15 days to reach optimal humidity.

The region primarily grows old rootstock varieties like SL28 and SL34, known for their exceptional cup quality and productivity, respectively. Kyagalanyi's program aims to sustainably double current yields by promoting better farm management and climate resilience, helping the Bakonzo families thrive.
