Perched on the fertile slopes of Costa Rica’s Turrialba Volcano, the Aquiares Estate is one of the country’s largest and most historic coffee farms. Founded in 1890, this 924-hectare estate is a global model of sustainable agriculture, growing high-quality, shade-grown Arabica coffee while preserving the environment and uplifting a vibrant community.

Aquiares means “land between rivers,” and its rich volcanic soil and natural springs create an ideal environment for exceptional coffee. The estate is Rainforest Alliance certified, 100% carbon neutral (even carbon negative), and has pioneered climate-smart farming for decades. Over 50,000 shade trees cool the soil, preserve water, and improve cup quality, while protected natural corridors support thriving biodiversity.

Led by the visionary Don Alfonso since 1992, Aquiares transformed from a traditional plantation into a thriving, independent town. Thanks to his efforts, 96% of residents now own their homes, and the town boasts its own school, nutrition center, and cultural landmarks. Today, only 15% of residents work on the farm—many have become doctors, teachers, and leaders.

The Aquiares Estate controls the entire coffee production process, from seedling to export. This Esperanza microlot is a hybrid of Caturra and Ethiopian 531, handpicked at peak ripeness and processed using an African Washed method to enhance complexity and clarity. Innovative drying techniques in custom greenhouses ensure consistent quality, even in Turrialba’s humid climate.
